Ulisse Community suggestions

We suggest to visit also Salento in Lis

Sometimes, when people think of Salento, they only imagine Lecce and its beaches, without considering that it’s an actual “region within the region”. If you want to actually visit Salento, you must at least see Otranto, Gallipoli, Santa Maria di Leuca, and some of the most beautiful beaches, like the ones that go from Leuca to Porto Cesareo (not forgetting the fascinating cliffs along the Adriatic Sea).

How to get around

Our suggestion is to come to Salento by air or by train only if you can rent a car. Public transportation from Lecce to the coast could be very crowded during the summer season, and it is not that reliable. To have further information about public transportation in Salento, please visit the province official website http://www.provincia.le.it/web/provincialecce/trasporti or Ferrovie Sud Est website https://www.fseonline.it/.

Best Things to Do

Cocktails in Lecce and Gallipoli historic center

The baroque buildings in Lecce have been nominated to become part of the UNESCO heritage. Gallipoli historic cittadella is renowned for its peculiar shops and its nightlife!

Boat Trip

Renting a boat, with or without a skipper, will let you admire the coast from the sea from Santa Maria di Leuca up until Otranto. It is a jagged coastline peaking on the sea, so having a boat is necessary. To be experienced at sunset!

Otranto Aragonese Castle

Otranto is the most eastern Italian town, full of history thanks to Medieval Castle Alfonsino and to the Byzantine Cathedral. Here you must visit the Cappella dei Beati Martiri d’Otranto and the San Pietro Church.

Events

Sagre and country festivals

The Sagre are traditional festivals where good food, wine and the typical pizzica will ensure a successful event. Local singers and bands liven up the evening with the most loved music in Salento: taranta. The most famous relevant events are the worldwide known Notte della Taranta in Melpignano (22nd August), the Sagra de lu Purpu in Melendugno (2-3rd August), the Festa della Municeddhra in Cannole (1st August), the Festa de lu Mieru in Carpignano Salentino (2-4th September).

Patronal festivals

Patronal festivals are celebrated in honor of the saint patron of each town. Lights, parades, colorful stands will fill each town and you’ll be able to fully experience the local tradition (especially the religious one). The most famous are Santa Domenica in Scorrano, known for its lights, a true spectacular show not to be missed (from 5th July), and Sant’Oronzo Festival in Lecce (24-25th August).
